My vision for Being the Medicine is a modern acupuncture offering in the inner tradition of Chinese medicine, which focuses on the inseparable spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical aspects of health. I have deep respect for the indigenous wisdom of East Asian medicine and Daoist philosophy in particular. At the same time, I’m continually excited by the possibilities that emerge from combining old and new, intuitively right with evidence-based, “tried and true” with “never done before”. A genuine interest in holistic health drives my exploration of how social, cultural, and political influences impact who we are and how well we live.
Hello and welcome in!
I’m Joshua Levy, L.Ac, Dipl. Ac.
Originally from Queens, NY, I studied digital media as an undergrad with aspirations of becoming a documentary filmmaker. Starting in my 20’s I ended up working in a variety of customer service and operations roles at a tech start up which brought me to the Bay Area, CA. Recovering from years of city life while always craving a slower pace, the decade spent in the beauty of nature along the California coast, from hikes in the hills among redwood forests to road trips along the Pacific ocean, changed my life and brought new perspectives, awe, and balance while warding off burnout in a fast-paced career. Over time, I increasingly gravitated to the abundance of local offerings in personal growth, mindbody practices, wisdom traditions, and holistic healing arts, ditching happy hours for dharma talks at places like East Bay Meditation Center. Eventually I found a path studying Chinese medicine both as an inner calling and as a logical response to the shortcomings of a for-profit medical system that monetizes illness in the broader context of a culture that prioritizes material wealth while destroying the planet.
I choose to practice personalized, whole being care because I believe it is the only way to truly heal the issues we face individually and as a society. My aspiration for a more equitable and community-oriented world rooted in decolonized perspectives and social justice values is at the heart of everything I do.
The lineages of practitioners who have refined the science and art of Chinese medicine over millenia deserve sincere gratitude. I find it today to be one of the most adaptable, precise, and expansive vehicles capable of delivering the medicine most needed for our times. I integrate Chinese cosmology with Western medicine, contemporary psychology with ancient methods of liberation, weave conscious and unconscious, microcosm and macrocosm, to seek essence and assimilate skillful means across disciplines and cultures.
I help people find freedom from old patterns and conditioning, integrate expanded states of being, and heal from trauma and oppression to reach new potential. Chinese medicine can be particularly effective for conditions that are difficult to explain and elusive to resolve in standard Western medical settings. I also specialize in aiding those who are navigating painful or unexpected life transitions, folks who are trying to merge their spiritual insights into everyday life, people who feel stuck and want to find purpose, and those motivated to live their ideals and stand up for what’s right sustainably in the long term. I especially appreciate helping the helpers – working with other therapists, practitioners, healers, artists, activists, teachers, social workers, counselors, caregivers, non-profit leaders, small business owners, and outside the box thinkers, seekers and finders of all backgrounds, orientations, and identities.
I graduated with a Master of Science in Traditional Asian Medicine from Acupuncture and Integrative Medicine College in Berkeley, CA in 2023, and I’m currently pursuing my doctorate as I live and work on the island of Maui in the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi. I donate 5% of all proceeds from my practice to organizations and causes led by and in solidarity with indigenous peoples locally and globally, and endeavor to contribute time and energy in a positive way to efforts for landback, rematriation, and reparations for historic and ongoing occupation and displacement.
My dissertation in progress focuses on depth healing through the practice of Chinese medicine in its capacity to shift our consciousness. It contextualizes the traditional Daoist roots of the medicine in the context of what Wahinkpe Topa (Four Arrows) and Darcia Narvaez, PhD, refer to as the kinship worldview. They highlight principles among diverse expressions of indigenous cultures around the world which share the common view of humans as part of, rather than separate from, nature – foundational as well to any sincere practice of Chinese medicine. I argue this worldview remains more essential than ever if CM is to embody its full potency for healing and transformation. I consider alternatives to reductive modes of Western appropriation which range from more benevolently modeled offerings of complementary and integrative care all the way to vastly more profound syntheses like scholar-practitioner Lonny Jarrett’s emergent formulation of integral medicine, an endeavor which I wholly subscribe to.
I believe at my core that each person has a unique gift to offer the world. In medicine I am devoted to removing obstacles and supporting people in cultivating their own capacity for more wholesome expression in order to create a more peaceful and sustainable presence on this beautiful Earth.
